Charity Vilakazi tells stories through photography, painting and video art

Charity Vilakazi tells stories through photography, painting and video art. She currently lives in Johannesburg, but calls Durban home. Her “overly imaginative views” are inspired by her father and grandmother.

Growing up as the last-born girl in her family, she spent her days annoying her grandmother by pestering her with questions. Her grandmother always asked about her dreams and advised her to write them all down. Hence the creation of Charity’s from “my soul to eye” world – a creative space where she does all her brainstorming.

Her father introduced her to film and photography. She used to go with her father when he was shooting ads or shows and loved every moment of it. He saw how much she enjoyed being behind the camera and registered her in a photography school in Newtown, Johannesburg.

She fell more in love with photography at the Market Photo Workshop. Once she started learning how to paint, she then found confidence in creating video art. Her work deals with abstraction, mythology, African folklore, curiosity, self-analysis , femininity and spirituality, but it is also cinematically inspired.

She has been part of few group exhibitions and programmes, including:

  • (in)sight, an all-women show at Through The Lens Collective
  • Joburg Fringe
  • Between10and5 A3E programme
  • SACII art accelerator
